The man directly responsible for this cell-building operation in Argentina was the cultural attache of the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires, Mohsen Rabbani. His job was supposedly to provide cultural and religious information. His real job, however — like that of the Iranian ambassador to Syria in 1983, Ali-Akbar Mohtashemi — was building the local terror network.
A Shiite cleric, Rabbani gave a 1991 speech in a Buenos Aires convention hall before an audience of about 100 Argentinean right-wing advocates and Shiite Muslims. The front row was reserved for officials of the Iranian embassy, who beamed as Rabbani declared in schoolboy Spanish, "Israel must disappear from the face of the earth.

COLUMN ONE : Hezbollah: The Latin Connection : Bombings in Argentina and Panama prompt concern over the radical group's growing presence in the region. Experts say lax security and porous borders create a prime base for terrorists.
August 04, 1994TRACY WILKINSON TIMES STAFF WRITERBUENOS AIRES — The convention hall near the National Congress was festooned with flags bearing Islamic symbols and posters of Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock shrine. About 100 Argentine right-wing activists and Shiite Muslims filled the audience. In the front row sat diplomats from the Iranian Embassy.

The embassy's cultural affairs officer, Imam Mohsen Rabbani, rose. "Israel," he intoned in accented Spanish, "must disappear from the face of the Earth." He and a dozen speakers who followed quoted Iran's late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and called for unity in the fight against Zionism and the satanism of the West.

Congress Hears Again About Hezbollah's Role in Latin America
By Luis Fleischman On July 12, 2011 ....The Committee on Homeland Security met on July 7th to discuss Hezbollah’s growing influence in Latin America. Testifying at the hearing were Roger Noriega, former Under Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere and American Ambassador to the Organization of American States; Douglas Farah, Senior Fellow at the International Assessment and Strategy Center and a former Washington Post journalist; Ilan Berman, Vice President of the American Foreign Policy Council; and; Dr. Melanie Cammett, professor at Brown University.
[...]
Noriega also spoke about the Venezuelan government’s complicity in encouraging Hezbollah activities. A key operative in the Hezbollah network is the second highest ranked diplomat in the Venezuelan embassy in Syria. The man, Ghazi Nasserdine, along with two of his brothers, manages a network that raises and launders money and recruits and trains operatives to expand Hezbollah’s influence in Venezuela and throughout Latin America. One of Nassardine’s brothers maintains relationships in the broader Islamic community via a multi-national organization known as the Federation of Arab and American Associations (FEARAB) in an effort to spread Hezbollah’s ideas.

It is important to add to Noriega’s point that FEARAB has been in existence in Latin America since the early 1970’s as an entity organized to serve as a mutual aid society to immigrants and residents of Arab origin, even though it was founded with the help the Arab League. Yet, FEARAB has been radicalized in the last several years. Its leaders are making incendiary statements and decades of decent relations between Arabs and Jews in countries such as Argentina have met their lowest point as a result of such radicalization.

This shows the extent to which Hezbollah reaches out to local populations of Arab origin and mobilizes them. Nasserdine’s youngest brother is strengthening Hezbollah’s presence by recruiting adherents via the Circulos Bolivarianos, Chavez’s main political and social organization aimed at spreading and monitoring Chavez’ revolution at the local level.

Furthermore, Noriega added that the individual who oversees the parallel Hezbollah network on behalf of the Qods Force is Mohsen Rabbani, a high-ranking Iranian wanted by prosecutors in Argentina for his role in the 1992 and 1994 terrorist attacks against the Israeli embassy and the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires.

Noriega’s main point seems to be that the presence of Hezbollah in the region has metastasized. As a result of the support Venezuela, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Bolivia and others are giving to the terrorist organization, a more active role for Hezbollah should be expected in the future. Since the State Department has not given this issue the attention it deserves, Noriega believes the problem is further aggravated...

Are Iran's Terrorists Finding a Safe Haven In Latin America?
By Joseph Humire

The IRFC-QF or “Qods Force”, which is Iran's elite unit within the IRGC and responsible for exporting the Islamic Revolution throughout the world, has engaged in terrorist activity in Latin America for quite some time. The infamous Tri-Border Area (TBA) between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay has long been considered a safe haven for various Islamic terrorist groups— many of which are funded and supported by the Qods Force of Iran.

Of the many Iranians implicated in the attacks during the nineties in Argentina, one individual stands out as having masterminded these attacks—Mohsen Rabbani. Rabbani is the former cultural attaché of the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires.

Rabbani, who now heads the Oriental Thought Cultural Institute in Qom, Iran, currently has an extradition order and red notice from Interpol barring his travel to the region. Yet, Interpol's warnings have not stopped Rabbani from moving in and out of Latin America under false aliases as he visits his brother, who currently resides in Brazil, to help establish recruitment and proselytization operations throughout the region under the guise of “Islamic centers and mosques.”

In general, Rabbani's recruitment, training and proselytization operations are carried out by Iran's proxy Hezbollah. Through Hezbollah, Rabbani's agenda has been exported throughout Latin America reaching as far north as Mexico....

Brazil latest base for Islamic extremists
By Robin Yapp, Sao Paulo
6:25PM BST 03 Apr 2011
More than 20 Islamic extremists connected to al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups are using Brazil as a base to hide, raise money or plan attacks, according to leaked documents.
[...]
However, according to Veja he is also in control of an online communications arm of al-Qaeda called Jihad Media Battalion, which has a presence in 17 countries around the world and spreads communications from al-Qaeda leaders as well as publicising attacks.

Another of those named is Mohsen Rabbani, an Iranian wanted by Interpol as the suspected architect of bombings on Jewish targets in Buenos Aires in the 1990s that killed 114 people.

According to the documents, he frequently slips in and out of Brazil on a false passport and has recruited at least 24 youngsters in three Brazilian states to attend "religious formation" classes in Tehran.

"Without anybody noticing, a generation of of Islamic extremists is appearing in Brazil," said Alexandre Camanho de Assis, who co-ordinates Brazil's network of public prosecutors across 13 states

The Terrorist "Professor"
Veja Wednesday, April 20th, 2011
Translation by IASW.
Original in Portuguese...

One of the most wanted criminals in the world, Iranian Mohsen Rabbani, teaches "religious training courses" to lure poor rural Brazilians.

The man pictured– white beard, wearing brown, and his head wrapped in a turban — is the Iranian Mohsen Rabbani. Among the seventeen people who surround him are eight Brazilians. Rabbani is considered by these people to be a teacher. The classroom is located in the city of Qom in Iran, which is sacred to Shiite Muslims. Converts to Islam, the young Brazilians traveled, with all expenses paid, to deepen their religious knowledge. Recruiting or proselytizing is common to all faiths. In this case, however, distortions are disturbing. Rabbani is not a teacher either. VEJA revealed two weeks ago that, in addition to being one of the most wanted terrorists in the world, he is also responsible for recruiting young Brazilians for courses on "religious training." What this terrorist, named as a perpetrator of one of the bloodiest attacks in history and responsible for the deaths of over a hundred people, may be teaching the Brazilians is, at present, a major concern of the authorities. The clues uncovered so far to unravel this mystery are not encouraging.

"Professor" Rabbani is wanted for his involvement in acts of terrorism since November 9, 2006. His capture is considered so vital that Interpol has included his name in a so-called "red notice," the select list of most wanted people in the world. The international arrest warrant against Rabbani was issued by Argentinean courts. He is considered one of the masterminds behind two attacks on Jewish targets in Buenos Aires, which killed no less than 114 people in 1992 and 1994. Rabbani was an Iranian Embassy official in Argentina’s capital and not only developed, but also perpetrated terrorist acts. With diplomatic status, he is now protected by the regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — and responsible for the recruitment of followers throughout Latin America (see document on pg. 68), promising religious influence and also money. Rabbani’s effort to amass followers in the poor regions of Brazil with no tradition linked to Islam is noteworthy.

"Rabbani is a serious security threat, including in Brazil. In Argentina, he spread his vision of radical, extremist, and violent Islam, which resulted in dozens of casualties during the Buenos Aires terrorist attacks. Now, based in Iran, he continues to play a significant role in the spread of extremism in Latin America," prosecutor Alberto Nisman, head of the special unit of the Argentine prosecutors charged with investigating the attacks, said to VEJA.

The enticement of Brazilians for courses abroad has been monitored for four years by the Federal Police and the ABIN, the government’s secret service. It is Rabbani himself, with help from people he trusts, who chooses those who will travel. From 2007 until today, three groups of Brazilians have visited Iran. There are plenty of reasons for such surveillance. The course has, in fact, a strong religious content. But that is not what is of concern. Students from one of the groups of Rabbani have confided that, during these travels, they have visited the premises of the radical Lebanese group Hezbollah, considered a terrorist organization by many countries, including the United States. Reports to which VEJA had access state that the courses of Professor Rabbani are some sort of an entryway for terrorism. According to these documents, the classes include radical preaching and training in military camps.

180 kilometers away from Recife, in rural Pernambuco, the city of Belo Jardim is the most active center for the recruitment of extremists. Of the eight selected Brazilians for the first class taken to Iran in late 2007, four were from Belo Jardim. A brother of Mohsen Rabbani, who lived in Curitiba, personally took care of recruitment. Today, this Pernambuco city of 58,000 inhabitants deserves constant attention from the Federal Police and ABIN. Among the Brazilians are lured a taxi motorcyclist, a schoolteacher, an official of the Banco do Brasil, and an English teacher — all from humble backgrounds. Erlan Batista Machado, motorcyclist, had never been on a plane until the day he flew to Sao Paulo and from there to Iran, where he studied at the invitation of Rabbani. In Iran, he gained a new name: Sayd. Approached by VEJA, Erlan said he accepted the invitation because he wanted to know more about Islam. "It was a wonderful experience," he said. He said he never had contact with terrorists or with radical groups.

The reaction of Professor Joao Adriano Oliveira was the same when asked about the matter: "It was just a religion course." Joao Adriano, who teaches in a public school and is learning the Arabic language, was a natural leader of the group formed in Belo Jardim. Renamed Abw Husayn, it was his responsibility to make contacts with the brother of Rabbani and with Iran. Travel expenses were paid by a foundation coordinated by Rabbani and sponsored by the Ahmadinejad government. Joao and his classmates also received small amounts of money during their period of stay in Iran. They came back with a promise from Rabbani to donate $350,000 to build a mosque in the city.

Messages exchanged between the group intercepted by Brazilian police reveal that the goal of recruiting Brazilians and traveling to Iran involves more than spiritual enlightenment through religion. The messages contain evidence that the group and its leaders in Iran have something to hide. The report had access to e-mails exchanged by Joao Adriano (Abw Husayn) and Rodrigo Jalloul, a Sao Paulo resident who went to Iran for almost four years and remained there — today, according to our investigation, he is the right arm of Rabbani for matters that relate to clandestine activities in Brazil. In a message dated April 5 last year, Joao warns Adriano Jalloul, who planned to come to Brazil for a visit, of the existence of investigations into the group: "The Federal Police got involved in an investigation into Hezbollah money laundering. We can talk more about this some time, but I believe that, as of today, we have been monitored for more than one (sic). If you come, do it in a secretive manner, at the last minute, and only let us know when you are in the region."

The papers seized included an annex to the document illustrated in this report. They make reference to Hezbollah and reproduce fiery speeches against Israel and Jews. The students of extremism in Iran have brought along pictures of facilities maintained by the Lebanese group on Iranian soil – the itinerary included excursions to various regions of the country and visits to religious and political leaders. "It has nothing to do with terrorism. What we learned here is religion. Mr. Rabbani tells us that these accusations against him are all untrue," said Rodrigo Jalloul to VEJA. That’s not what those responsible for surveillance of terrorist movements in Brazil think. "Our biggest fear is that militants are being recruited for future terrorist attacks here, and for that reason we must redouble our attention towards these trips, especially because we will soon have in Brazil global events like the Olympics and World Cup, which can encourage these people to commit extreme acts, "said one of the authorities dedicated to the subject.

Along with the recruits in Belo Jardim, youth from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico traveled to Iran. The group’s ties to South America go beyond recruitment. The Federal Police has information that Rabbani came to Brazil a few times in recent years. In one of those visits, almost three years ago, he used methods that could cause a diplomatic crisis. The extremist embarked in Tehran bound for Caracas, Venezuela. From there, he entered Brazil illegally. Operated by Iran’s state airline, the Tehran-Caracas flight was called "Aeroterror" by intelligence officials for allegedly facilitating the access of terrorist suspects to South America. The Venezuelan government shields passenger lists from Interpol on that flight. Professor Rabbani's movements were being monitored. The idea was to detain him in Brazil. Notified, the Federal Police set up an operation, but the order to execute this operation took a while, due to a complicated discussion about the political implications. Once again, the extremist escaped.

Terrorists set up bases in Brazil
IASW Monday, May 16th, 2011
The Federal Police have proof that Al Qaeda and another four extremist organizations are using Brazil to promote propaganda, plan terrorist attacks, finance operations and recruit militants

Cover of Veja issue no. 2211. Not to be missed by experts on terrorism and strategic affairs

Khaled Hussein Ali was born in 1970, in the east of banon. His hometown, Kamed El Laouz, lies in the Bekaa Valley. In this region, Ali, a Sunni Muslim, did his military service. Afterwards, he disappeared. At the beginning of the 1990s, he reappeared in Sao Paulo. He married and had a daughter. Thanks to her, in 1998, he acquired the right to live in Brazil. He lives in Itaquera, in the East Side of Sao Paulo, and supports his family with the profits made by a LAN house in the Vila Matilde neighborhood. Laid-back, he spends the day at the door of the business greeting people. Ali leads a double life. He is one of the leaders of the propaganda organization behind Al Qaeda, the terrorist group led by Saudi Arabian Osama bin Laden. From Sao Paulo, the Lebanese coordinates extremists from the Jihad Media Battalion in seventeen countries. The texts or videos by Bin Laden's disciples are released upon his approval. The rule also applies to translations of speeches made by the Saudi terrorist and to videos put up on the internet by extremists. Furthermore, the Lebanese national provides logistical support for Al Qaeda's operations. He is part of a network of terrorists that is wrapping its tentacles around Brazil.

Treated like a prince by his cohorts. Ali was followed for four months by the Federal Police before being arrested in March 2009. The agents knew how he operated, but they could not access the data on his computer, which was protected by Al Qaeda's encryption tool, Mujahideen Secrets 2.0. To get access to his information, the police had to grab his computer while he was using it. They used a simple strategy: the monitored Ali until he accessed the internet and telephoned him. They struck while he answers the call. The computer was full of files that proved he was a leader of the Islamic terrorists. His e-mails make it possible to reconstruct calls he made to Afghan guerillas, probably the Taliban. In January 2009 Ali ordered, received and passed on to addresses in Afghanistan maps and topographical charts of that country. Afterwards, he ordered his subordinates to get manuals together to help their “brothers in arms” understand the material. Two hours later he got a course produced by the al-Qassam brigades, the armed branch of Hamas, the radical Palestinian party that governs the Gaza Strip.

In February 2009, the Jihad Media Battalion was trapped and Ali was called into action to defend it. At 8:00 pm on the 18th of that month Ali got an e-mail telling him that one of his men had been arrested in Gaza. He was said to be being held by Mossad, the Israeli secret service. With the news came a request that Ali block access by his cohort being held to Jihad Media Battalion files. This measure would protect the organization's secrecy and keep its militant members anonymous. From Sao Paulo he “shut down” the captured terrorist.

On the same day Ali got a message telling him about another cyber-jihadist's computer that had been infected by spyware. This time he ordered his subordinates to spread the virus through spam in order to confuse the Western intelligence services. His efficiency in these operations was praised by a terrorist who identifies himself as the number two in Al Qaeda in Iraq: “You are proving to the crusaders (Westerners) that we are in their countries, and that they cannot stop us from operating in their territory or from talking to their children.”

In addition to the proof of terrorism on the internet, the Federal Police found spam on Ali's computer sent to the United States to incite hate of Jews and black people. Other files, which attacked President Barack Obama, were sent to conservative American groups to stir up political discussion. Contacted by VEJA magazine, Ali claimed to be someone else. This martial, however, allowed the Federal Police to charge him with racism, inciting crime and racketeering. He was not accused of terrorism because the Brazilian Penal Code does not make a provision for this crime. The Lebanese national spent 21 days in custody. He was released because the Federal Public Prosecutor did not press charges. Cases such this have further damaged relations between the US and Brazilian governments.

Twenty years ago the Brazilian authorities have known about – and ignored – reports drawn up by Interpol, the CIA, the FBI and the US Treasury Department about extremist activity in Brazil. The terrorist attacks against Jewish targets in Buenos Aires, which killed 114 people in 1992 and 1994, led to a review of the way the issue was being dealt with. The Federal Police reacted by putting together an antiterrorism service. Thanks to that, it was discovered that in 1995 Bin Laden and Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who helped plan the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 201 1, had been in Foz do Iguassu. Bin Laden's visit was revealed by VEJA eight years later. Despite the fact that the tentacles of terror have stretched further around Brazil, the federal government broke up the service in 2009. All the agents from the sector were removed, which damaged the investigations. Two months ago VEJA had access to reports drawn up by this team. Besides Ali, twenty militants from Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Moroccan Islamic Combatant Group and Egypt's al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya use or used to use Brazil as a hideout, logistics center, fund-raising source, and planning center for terrorist attacks. The reporters from this magazine also got reports sent to Brazil by the US government.

These documents allowed VEJA to find Ali and another four extremists. They live in Brazil as if they were regular citizens. One of them was sentenced in his own country. Hesham Ahmed Mahmoud Eltrabily has been identified in Egypt as one of those involved in the massacre of 62 tourists visiting the ruins in Luxor, in 1997. With an arrest warrant issued by Interpol, he was captured in Sao Paulo, five years afterwards. The Supreme Federal Tribunal refused to extradite him, claiming that the proof provided by the Egyptian government was not decisive. Now, the Egyptian sells electronics at the Galeria Pagé, one of Sao Paulo's main centers selling illegally smuggled products. VEJA passed on the content of this report to the staff at his store, but Eltrabily did not return our telephone calls. The Eltrabily case is similar to the Mohamed Ali Abou Elezz Ibrahim Soliman case, who was not tracked down by VEJA. Soliman was also sentenced in Egypt for his part in the Luxor attack. Arrested in 1999, the Supreme Tribunal rejected Soliman's extradition, finding formal errors of instruction in the process, such as the mistranslation of documents. Just like Eltrabily, he sells illegally smuggled products, but in Foz do Iguassu. As one of his cohorts, he is part of the Brazilian al-Gama´a al-Islamiyya cell, subordinated to Al Qaeda.

Accused of plotting terrorist attacks against the Jewish institutions that killed 114 people in Buenos Aires in 1992 and 1994, Iranian Mohsen Rabbani is wanted by Interpol but often comes in and out of Brazil without any trouble. An employee of the Iranian government, he uses passports issued in false names to visit a brother who lives in Curitiba. The last time this happened was in September last year. When Interpol alerted the Federal Police that he was in Brazil he had already escaped. But it is not only family ties that make this terrorist visit Brazil. The Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) has discovered that Rabbani has recruited at least twenty young people in Sao Paulo, Pernambuco and Parana states to go on “religious training courses” in Tehran.

“Without anyone noticing, a generation of Islamic extremists is rising up in Brazil,” says government prosecutor Alexandre Camanho de Assis, who coordinates the Public Prosecutor's Office in thirteen states and the Federal District.

In Sao Bernardo do Campo, in the region of Sao Paulo known as ABC Paulista, two Brazilians have been converted. Their stories were discovered by the CIA during the interrogation of one of the Al Qaeda leaders, Saudi national Abu Zubaydah, the man who convinced English national Richard Reid to put a bomb in the heel of his shoe and to try to set it off on a flight from Paris to Miami, in 2001. Being held in Guantanamo, Zubaydah was water boarded. In his book, Decision Points, Former President George W. Bush claims that torturing Zubaydah helped prevent other terrorist attacks. In Guantanamo, the Saudi jihadist said that he had welcomed the men from Sao Paulo Alan Cheidde and Anuar Pechliye to the combatant training camp in Khaldan, in Afghanistan. Cheidde is from a well-known family in ABC Paulista. His father, Felipe Cheidde, made one of the largest fortunes in the region in factoring, bingo and lottery houses. He became a Federal Deputy for the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). A he owns a fourth division soccer club, Esporte Clube Sao Bernardo, he is popular in his city. His 1,400 m2 house is one of the most sumptuous in Sao Bernardo do Campo.

Even so, the connections his son Alan had with terrorists went unnoticed by the Brazilian authorities until 2004, when the CIA told the Federal Police. The US agents reported that Cheidde and his friend Pechliye had been asked to sort out Brazilian passports for members of Al Qaeda. Questioned by the Federal Police, both said they had lost their passports twice, in 2000 and 2001, and they could not remember the circumstances under which it had happened. Despite considering the excuse to be full of holes, the Brazilian authorities decided to release them. Cheidde told VEJA that his trip is a private matter. Pechliye did not return the reporter's call. One of the rare occasions on which terrorists were troubled was in June 2005. That month the Federal Police made use of Operation Panorama against illegal immigration to arrest 21 extremists. They were charged with criminal misrepresentation and altering documents to get permanent visas for Brazil. They did this by faking marriages to Brazilian women.

The radicals shoes single mothers, paid them R$ 1,000 to take part in the fraud and they recognized the children as their own. They formally became the parents of Brazilian children and so could not be extradited.

The gang was led by Lebanese national Jihadist Chaim Baalbalti and Jordanian Sael BasheerYahya Najib Atari, a prominent Muslim leader from Foz do Iguassu. With the gang, the Federal Police seized 1,206 passports issued by Portugal, Spain, and Mexico. Mostly stolen, these documents were sold for US$ 11,000 each to extremists wanted by the police in several countries to radicals who wanted to disappear without a trace. The organization run by Baalbaki and Atari was not restricted to Brazil. Kuwait has accused the Jordanian of associating with local counterfeiters to help jihadists escape. Most of the Islamic community in Foz do Iguassu rejects terrorism. Fugitives of war and terrorist attacks in their native countries, it is the main source of information for the Federal Police. On the Triple Frontier of Brazil. Argentina and Paraguay, radicals form a marginal contingent among the 12,000 Muslims living there. But this has not stopped Atari from presiding over the Arab Palestine Association nr from being a spokesperson for the community. It was as such that he posed for the photograph at the top of this report. Contacted by VEJA afterwards, Atari, who like Baalbaki is free while awaiting the court case on criminal misrepresentation, racketeering, and aiding illegal immigration, said he would not like to talk about the accusations made against him.

Atari audacity reflects the comfort the law assures him of. He and Baalbaki, besides being free, will only be extradited if found guilty. “Terrorists take advantage of the fragility of Brazilian legislation,' admitted Daniel Lorenz, former head of the Intelligence Department at the Federal Police and currently secretary of Security in the Federal District, speaking at a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies. The pair continue to do business in Parana, a kind of Wall Street for the jihad “The Triple Frontier is, today, a financial artery for Hezbollah,” wrote the director of the Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control at the US Treasury, Arfam Szubin, in a report sent to the US Department of State, referring to the Lebanese group. This situation has been arrived at because of the refusal of the Brazilian government to face up to terrorism. In 2007 a group of Deputies tried to amend the constitutional article that rules on terrorism. It was defeated by the then national Justice Secretary, Pedro Abramovay. “He claimed that an anti-terrorism law would attract terrorists,” says former Deputy Raul Jungmann (PPS-PE). By this way of thinking, of lack of it, Brazil should abolish the laws against murder, theft and drug dealing. After all, they would also incite people to break the law.

Lenience with Islamic extremism is also a feature of Brazilian diplomacy, which does not recognize Hezbollah, Hamas or the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (Farc) as terrorists. In part, this is to do with an attempt to sell an image of Brazil as a tropical paradise armor plated against terrorist attacks. But it also presents itself as full of sympathetic from the left for jihadists, who are visceral enemies of the United States. An anti-terrorism law would also cover “social movements,” such as the Movement of Victims of Dams which, in 2007, threatened to open the stop gates at the Tucurui hydroelectric plant, and the Landless Peasants Movement which invades and destroys farms. “The Federal Police and the US government indicate the action taken by social movements as one of the main impediments to more effective combating of terrorism,” says Jungmann.

Although it has carried out the investigations described in this report, the Federal Police adopt an ambiguous stance when commentating on the discoveries their people have made. The institution is evasive, saying that it “does not label people or groups that in some way may act having been inspired by terrorism.” This opaque and incoherent message not only helps extremist organizations take root in Brazil but it creates great risks for the immediate future. Terrorist handbooks recommend that militants launch terrorist attacks on occasions when their actions gain visibility. The federal police and prosecutors interviewed by VEJA fear that they see such opportunities in the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

THE ESCALATION OF EVIL

1st STAGE (1992) – Brazil began to be used as a stopping-off point for terrorists like those who blew up the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, In 1995, Osama bin Laden and the third-in-charge of Al Qaeda, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, went to Foz do Iguassu, as VEJA reveled in 2003.

2nd STAGE (1996) – They began to establish themselves legally in Brazil. One cover they used to stay in the country was to legally adopt the children of single mothers. As official parents of Brazilian children, they could not be extradited.

3rd STAGE (1999) – Beginning of recruiting Brazilians. The most inclined to fight were sent abroad to learn more about the extremists' doctrine and to be trained in terrorist camps in Afghanistan.

th STAGE (2001) – Brazil began to be used as a terrorism finance base and attack preparation center. After the attacks on September 11, the US Treasury Department identified money being sent to Hezbollah from Brazil. One single militant set up in Parana sent US$ 100 million to this extremist group.

Islamic extremists currently operating in Triple Frontier area, Brazilian magazine says
[Buenos Aires Herald, April 2011]

Islamic extremist groups such as Al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas are illegally operating in the Triple Frontier area shared by Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, where they allegedly gather large amounts of money, recruit new militants and plan additional attacks, Brazilian magazine Veja denounced.

The weekly publication stated that several reports by the Brazilian Federal Police and the US government warn that at least twenty high-ranking members from the three organizations are currently operating in the so-called "Triple Frontier" area, shared by Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.

The Brazilian government has always denied the existence of any activities linked to these Islamic groups, but has admitted that a large portion of the Lebanese community living in the country legally sends large sums of money to the Middle East.

Also under investigation, according to the article published on Sunday, is Mohsen Rabbani, a former cultural attaché to the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires, who is suspected of being involved in the 1992 and 1994 terrorist attacks against the Jewish community in Argentina.
Apparently Rabbani "frequently flies to Brazil under a fake identity in order to visit a brother living in Curitiba." According to Interpol authorities and intelligence agents in Brazil, his last visit to Brazil was in last September.

According to Veja, the ABIN (Brazil’s intelligence agency) found out that Rabbani took over 20 young men from the Greater Sao Paulo area, Pernambuco and Parana to a meeting Tehran in which they would be instructed on religious formation.

The article also assures that 41-year old Lebanese Khaled Hussein Ali, currently living in Sao Paulo since 1998 when he obtained legal residence after fathering a Brazilian girl, has coordinated Al Qaeda operations in over 17 countries from Brazil.

In 2009, Ali was detained and secluded for 21 days in a Brazilian jail after authorities raided his home and found several videos and emails that instigated hate against the Jews and black people.

Police authorities believed that Ali was one of Al Qaeda’s top propaganda men, but the Brazilian Public Ministry decided not to bring him to justice over a lack of evidence.

The magazine also states that the Shiite Lebanese group Hezbollah and the Palestine group Hamas also have a logistics operations centre in the Triple Frontier region.

Iranian Mullah Responsible for Terrorist Attacks in Argentina
by Anna Mahjar-Barducci
June 24, 2011 at 4:30 am

Iran is investing in strengthening the political and economical relations with several countries in Latin America. It is also actively engaged in religious proselytizing, particularly aimed for the poorest sectors of the Latin American society. Converts to Islam eventually undergo religious and political training, including in Iran, to prepare these new adherents to become instruments and agents of the Iranian regime.

Mohsen Rabbani, an Iranian mullah and a former cultural attaché in Argentina, is a leading figure in spreading Islam in Latin America, particularly in Brazil. Rabbani, while in the service at the Iranian embassy in Buenos Aires, was involved in the planning and implementation of the deadly terrorist attack on the Asociacion Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) Jewish cultural center of 1994 that resulted in 85 dead and more than 150 injured. Rabbani's involvement in the bombing was persistently denied by Iranian authorities. In 2007, however, Interpol finally decided to issue a Red Notice for Rabbani, which is an arrest warrant with a view to extradite.

Despite the arrest warrant, Rabbani, who is presently the director of Oriental Thought Cultural Institute in the Iranian city of Qom, continues, unabated, to proselytize in Latin America. According to Brazilian sources, he has traveled several times to Brazil under a false identity in order to recruit new converts to Islam. According to Argentine prosecutor, Alberto Nisman, charged to investigate the AMIA attacks in Buenos Aires, "Rabbani is a serious security threat, including in Brazil. In Argentina, he spread his vision of radical, extremist, and violent Islam, which resulted in dozens of casualties during the Buenos Aires terrorist attacks. Now, based in Iran, he continues to play a significant role in the spread of extremism in Latin America."

The activity Rabbani is developing in Belo Jardim, in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, where local police have found evidence that the recruitment of Brazilians, and subsequent traveling to Iran, involves more than spiritual enlightenment through religion, is particularly alarming. Along with the recruits in Belo Jardim, youth from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico are also traveling to Iran.

The Brazilian Federal Police has information that Rabbani, in one of his latest visits to Brazil, used methods that could cause a "diplomatic crisis." The Iranian mullah embarked a plane in Tehran bound for Caracas, Venezuela. From there, he entered Brazil illegally. Operated by Iran's state airline, the Tehran-Caracas flight was called "Aeroterror" by intelligence officials, for allegedly facilitating the access of terrorist suspects to South America. The Venezuelan government hid the passenger lists from Interpol on that flight. Rabbani's movements were being monitored, the idea being to detain him in Brazil. Notified, the Federal Police set up an operation, but the order to execute the operation took longer than anticipated, due to complicated discussion about the political implications. Once again, Rabbani managed to escaped.

In the 675 pages complied by the Argentinean Investigation Unit of the Office of the Attorney General on the AMIA terrorist attack, it is reported that one of the ways used by Rabbani to secure an individual's loyalty is to send them to Iran so as to deepen their knowledge of Islam.

One of Rabbani's favorite disciples in Latin America is Sheik Karim Abdul Paz, an Argentinian convert to Shiite Islam, who formerly went by the name, Santiago Paz Bullrich. He used to be the imam of the Iranian-run al-Tahuid Mosque in Buenos Aires. Now he is imam of the Islamic Cultural Center in Santiago de Chile. He studied in Qom, and became a leading figure of Shiite Islam in Latin America. He doesn't hide his sympathies for Middle Eastern terrorist groups and maintains that the Shiite group, Hezbollah, is not a terrorist movement, but a "fundamental part of the heroic worldwide resistance against the U.S. and Israel's terrorist imperialism". This, apparently, is what Rabbani is teaching to Latin American converts during his spiritual courses in Iran.

Rabbani brings Brazilian converts to Iran

The man pictured– white beard, wearing brown, and his head wrapped in a turban — is the Iranian Mohsen Rabbani. Among the seventeen people who surround him are eight Brazilians. Rabbani is considered by these people to be a teacher. The classroom is located in the Iranian city of Qom, a place sacred to Shiite Muslims. New converts to Islam, the young Brazilians traveled to Iran, all expenses paid, to deepen their religious knowledge. Recruiting or proselytizing is common to all faiths. In this case, however, distortions are disturbing. Rabbani is not a teacher, either.

The Brazilian weekly, Veja, revealed two weeks ago that, in addition to being one of the most wanted terrorists in the world, he is also responsible for recruiting young Brazilians for courses on "religious training." What this terrorist, named as a perpetrator of one of the bloodiest attacks in history, and responsible for the deaths of over a hundred people, may be teaching the Brazilians is a major concern of the authorities. The clues uncovered so far to unravel this mystery are not encouraging.

"Professor" Rabbani is wanted for his involvement in acts of terrorism since November 9, 2006. His capture is considered so vital that Interpol has included his name in a so-called "red notice," a select list of most wanted people in the world. The international arrest warrant against Rabbani was issued by Argentinean courts. He is considered one of the masterminds behind two attacks on Jewish targets in Buenos Aires, which killed 114 people in 1992 and 1994. Rabbani was an Iranian embassy official in Argentina's capital. With diplomatic status, he is now protected by the regime of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad — and responsible for the recruitment of followers throughout Latin America, promising religious influence and also money. Rabbani's effort to amass followers in the poor regions of Brazil, with no tradition linked to Islam, is noteworthy.

"Rabbani is a serious security threat, including in Brazil. In Argentina, he spread his vision of radical, extremist, and violent Islam, which resulted in dozens of casualties during the Buenos Aires terrorist attacks. Now, based in Iran, he continues to play a significant role in the spread of extremism in Latin America," prosecutor Alberto Nisman, head of the special unit of the Argentine prosecutors charged with investigating the attacks, told Veja.

Rabbani's courses are an entryway for terrorism

The enticement of Brazilians for courses abroad has been monitored for four years by the Federal Police and the ABIN, the government's secret service. It is Rabbani himself, with help from people he trusts, who chooses those who will travel. From 2007 until today, three groups of Brazilians have visited Iran. There are plenty of reasons for such surveillance. The course has a strong religious content. But that is not what is of concern. Students from one of Rabbani's groups have confided that, during these travels, they have visited the premises of the radical Lebanese group Hezbollah, considered a terrorist organization by many countries, including the United States. Reports to which Veja had access say that Rabbani's courses are some sort of an entryway for terrorism. According to these documents, the classes include radical preaching and training in military camps.

The city of Belo Jardim, a Brazilian municipality in the state of Pernambuco, is the most active center for the recruitment of extremists. Among the Brazilians lured are: a taxi motorcyclist, a schoolteacher, an official of the Banco do Brasil, and an English teacher — all from humble backgrounds. The motorcyclist,Erlan Batista Machado, had never been on a plane until he flew to Sao Paulo, and from there to Iran, where he studied at the invitation of Rabbani.

Renamed Abu Husayn, it was his responsibility to make contacts with the brother of Rabbani and with Iran. Travel expenses were paid by a foundation coordinated by Rabbani and sponsored by the Ahmadinejad government. Joao and his classmates also received small amounts of money during their period of stay in Iran. They came back with a promise from Rabbani to donate $350,000 to build a mosque in the city.

Messages exchanged between the group, and intercepted by Brazilian police, reveal that the goal of recruiting Brazilians and traveling to Iran involves more than spiritual enlightenment through religion. The messages contained evidence that the group and its leaders in Iran have something to hide. The report also had access to e-mails exchanged by Joao Adriano (Abu Husayn) and Rodrigo Jalloul, a Sao Paulo resident who went to Iran for almost four years and remained there. Today, according to the investigation, he is the right arm of Rabbani for matters that relate to clandestine activities in Brazil. In a message dated April 5, 2010, Joao warned Adriano Jalloul, who planned to come to Brazil for a visit, of the existence of investigations into the group: "The Federal Police got involved in an investigation into Hezbollah money laundering. We can talk more about this some time, but I believe that, as of today, we have been monitored for more than one (sic). If you come, do it in a secretive manner, at the last minute, and only let us know when you are in the region."

Fiery speeches against Israel and Jews

The papers of the Brazilians seized by police included an annex to the document illustrated in this report. Mr. Rabbani tells us that these accusations against him are all untrue," Rodrigo Jalloul told Veja. But that's not what those responsible for surveillance of terrorist movements in Brazil think. The police "Our biggest fear is that militants are being recruited for future terrorist attacks here, and for that reason we must redouble our attention towards these trips, especially because we will soon have in Brazil global events like the Olympics and World Cup, which can encourage these people to commit extreme acts."

Along with the recruits in Belo Jardim, youth from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Mexico traveled to Iran. The group's ties to South America go beyond recruitment. The Federal Police has information that Rabbani came to Brazil a few times in recent years. In one of those visits, almost three years ago, he used methods that would be cause enough for a diplomatic crisis. The extremist embarked in Tehran bound for Caracas, Venezuela. From there, he entered Brazil illegally. Operated by Iran's state airline, the Tehran-Caracas flight was called "Aeroterror" by intelligence officials for allegedly facilitating the access of terrorist suspects to South America. Veja (Brazil), translation by InterAmerican Security Watch

Poll stunner: These American blacks OK with violent attacks
Shocking study shows high number holding favorable views of al-Qaida

The most dangerous Muslims in America may be black converts to Islam, according to a shocking new poll by the Pew Research Center.

African-American Muslims tend to hold the most violent views among U.S. Muslims surveyed by Pew in a poll released this week.

Fully 28 percent of U.S.-born black Muslim respondents said "suicide bombings and other violence against civilians" can be justified sometimes or at least in rare cases. That compares with 9 percent of foreign-born Muslims who hold the same view.

Pew also found that 11 percent of black Muslims living in the U.S. have a favorable opinion of al-Qaida – more than double the share of U.S. Muslims overall who hold that view. Another 21 percent of black Muslims hold only mildly unfavorable views of the terrorist organization responsible for attacking America 10 years ago; while 56 percent of that segment of the Muslim population hold very unfavorable views.

A popular African-American imam has preached that Islamic law permits Muslims to attack U.S. military targets – including C-130 military transport planes carrying the 82nd Airborne out of Fort Bragg, N.C., according to the best-selling book, "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America."

The Muslim cleric, Zaid Shakir, a frequent guest speaker at Council on American-Islamic Relations events, tells his Muslim audiences: "Jihad is physically fighting the enemies of Islam to protect and advance the religion of Islam. This is jihad."

Acceptable targets of jihad, he says, include U.S. military aircraft.

A dangerous new level
The president is facing a growing terrorist threat
Sep 3rd 2011 ABUJA from the print edition

..A SUICIDE-BOMBING on August 26th at the headquarters of the UN in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, which left at least 23 people dead, has sharply raised the stakes in the conflict between the government and its terrorist opponents. It was the first suicide-bombing in Nigeria to target an international body. It has rattled foreign residents. And it has made people question whether President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration has a convincing plan to stop such attacks.

The prime suspect is Boko Haram, an extremist Muslim group whose name means “Western education is sinful”. One of its spokesmen told foreign journalists that the action had been carried out to avenge the humiliating treatment of its members by Nigeria’s army and police. Although reluctant to admit to an embarrassing failure of security, Nigerian officials have blamed the sect.

The attack marks a big leap in Boko Haram’s ambitions and suggests it may now be colluding with other more established groups, including al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which made a similar attack on UN offices in Algeria four years ago. The Nigerian secret police say that a member of Boko Haram recently came back from Somalia to oversee the attack.

Most of the sect’s activities have hitherto been confined to the dusty north-east of Africa’s most populous nation, on the fringe of the Sahara desert. But in recent months it has expanded beyond its home ground. The latest bombing is the second in the capital since June, when the chief of police narrowly avoided being blown up in his headquarters.

In July Mr Jonathan set up a committee to look into the turmoil in the north-east, Boko Haram’s base. But it has been slow to report. Unless the president soon presents a plan of action, Nigerians and foreign investors may lose confidence in his government’s ability to deal with the problem.

It is hard to gauge the extent of Boko Haram’s following. It has no clear structure or evident chain of command. Poverty in the area has helped drive young men into the arms of radical Islam. Fervent religious extremism has encouraged people to assail the government. The security services’ heavy-handed tactics in trying to quash the violence with random arrests, killings and disappearances have fuelled the discontent. Counter-insurgency experts are urging them to be less bellicose.

Al-Qaida not the only U.S. enemy

Nearly 10 years after the 9/11 attacks, many politicians, diplomats, journalists and academics remain reluctant even to name America's enemies.

To take but one example: John Brennan, head of the White House homeland security office, has argued that America is only "at war with al-Qaida" and its closest affiliates.

I understand the impulse to frame the conflict as narrowly as possible. Brennan and others do not want to reinforce al-Qaida's message that Muslims from Afghanistan to Iraq to Israel to Paris to Detroit must choose between the umma, the global Islamic community, and the West - to fight for one and against the other.

But can we not say - truthfully and without playing into al-Qaida's hands - that there are regimes and groups within the Muslim world that are implacably hostile to the West? Can we not say that they subscribe to a belief system called Jihadism? The late Father Richard John Neuhaus defined Jihadism as a religiously inspired ideology built on the teaching "that it is the moral obligation of all Muslims to employ whatever means necessary in order to compel the world's submission to Islam."

Spanish Town Becoming "New Mecca of the Most Radical Islamism"
by Soeren Kern
September 1, 2011 at 5:00 am
The municipality of Salt, a town near Barcelona where Muslim immigrants now make up 40% of the population, has approved a one-year ban on the construction of new mosques. It is the first ban of its kind in Spain.

The moratorium follows public outrage over plans to build a massive Salafi mosque that is being financed by Saudi Arabia. Salafism is a branch of revivalist Islam that calls for restoring past Muslim glory by forcibly re-establishing an Islamic empire (Caliphate) across the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe such as Spain, which Salafists view as a Muslim state that must be reconquered for Islam.

OLYMPICS 2000 BOMB

Saturday, 26 August, 2000, 05:37 GMT 06:37 UK Olympic 'bomb plot' foiled

Police accidentally uncovered the threat to the Olympics

New Zealand police have uncovered a possible plot to blow up a nuclear reactor in Sydney during next month's Olympic Games.

The reactor is in Sydney's suburbs

Australian police have been informed and the two forces are working together on the case involving a group of Afghan refugees who had suspicious material in their possession. The group was reportedly linked with Afghanistan-based terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Detective superintendent Bill Bishop, New Zealand's National Crime manager, said: "That material included a map of Sydney highlighting a nuclear reactor and highlighting entrance and exit routes."

In Sydney, a New South Wales police spokesman said they had been briefed by New Zealand on the potential threat to the Lucas Heights nuclear research reactor in the city's outer suburbs.

Sydney has a population of about 4.5 million which could swell by another million people during the games... The bomb plot was reportedly linked to Osama bid Laden ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/896660.stm

CYANIDE

CYANIDE THREAT: Tapes reveal poison plan

Back to the Perpetrator's Page

John Follain and Nicholas Rufford

10-14-2001

SECRETLY recorded tapes have revealed plans by followers of Osama Bin Laden for a chemical weapon attack in Europe using a poisonous invisible gas that security sources say was cyanide.

A gang of terrorists active in Britain, Germany and Italy plotted to use tins of tomatoes to transport "a liquid that suffocates people". The plan was foiled after a Libyan at the centre of the plot was arrested in Munich on Wednesday.

The evidence is the first that Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda organisation was preparing to use weapons of mass destruction. The tapes were made by Italian anti-terrorist police, who bugged an apartment outside Milan that the gang thought was a safe house. The suspects discussed getting 10 litres of the poison, enough to kill thousands if released indoors.

One theory is that the group planned to spread the poison in an American government building in London or Rome. A witness who trained in one of Bin Laden's camps said he was instructed how to put cyanide in a building's ventilation system.

The tins of tomatoes could have been used to transport cyanide crystals before they were dissolved into a liquid, which could then be dispersed through the ventilation ducts. If large quantities were available, the vapour produced could kill many occupants of a building within 10 minutes.

The transcripts are part of evidence compiled by Stefano Dambruoso, an Italian prosecutor, against five suspected members of the Salafist Group for Faith and Combat, a militant offshoot of the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), backed by Bin Laden. The five are in custody in Milan. At least two had links to Britain.

Last Friday the US Treasury named the Islamic Cultural Institute in Milan, to which cell members were linked, as "the most important base of Al-Qaeda in Europe". It said the institute was used by Bin Laden's organisation "as a station from which weapons, men and money travel the whole world".

The clandestine recordings were made in March and April, when gang members were becoming impatient to receive instructions from Bin Laden and to be told the target. They also reveal claims that female followers of Bin Laden were being trained as potential suicide attackers.

The most chilling conversations took place between Ben Heni Mohamed Lased, a 32-year-old Libyan arrested in Munich last week, and Essid Sami Ben Khemais, 31, a Tunisian, believed to be the leader of the Italian cell, who was arrested in Milan in April. Khemais is believed to have met Mohammed Atta, one of the 19 hijackers behind the American attacks.

Khemais and Lased spent a week in an apartment near Milan to plan terrorist atrocities, unaware it was bugged. Lased is heard trying to teach Khemais to conceal a bomb in a personal cassette player, to which Khemais responds by asking about chemical weapons: "I'd like to learn how to use the medicine, I'd like to see what effect it has when someone breathes it in. The Libyan has the formula; he's a chemistry professor."

Another activist said: "What's going on - you are putting down your guns and taking up industrial products?" Lased replied: "There's a liquid which is extremely efficient because it suffocates people. Do you want to try it?" The other man said: "Yes, why not. A few barrels."

In another conversation, Khemais urges Lased to get in touch with "the sheikh", believed to be Bin Laden, about recruiting attackers.

"Talk to the sheikh. I need two people who I have already got in mind, the Libyan and the Kurd from London. What I need is not an army but two people who have got a brain, training and nothing to lose or to gain. They spread the gas and say goodbye. I only need a barrel of 10 litres and a few documents. God is with us."

On the evening of March 9, Lased confided: "Believe me, the sheikh is planning something. He has an objective and he wants to realise it, just like he has achieved all his desires. It's not a little thing."

Predicting the success of Bin Laden's terror campaign, Lased said: "God loves us because Europe is now in our hands. Now we are emigrant fighters, that's the task we've got to carry out with honour. We have to be like snakes. We have to fight and then hide."

Lased also explains how to reach Bin Laden's training camps by obtaining a visa from Iran's London embassy, ostensibly for visiting Mecca. "In Iran there is an organisation which helps mujaheddin brothers to cross the border. There's total collaboration with the Iranians," he said.

Khemais talked about trips to Afghanistan during which he saw Bin Laden's weapons, including captured US cruise missiles launched against the camps in 1998 but which failed to explode.

"The Americans are probably convinced that bombing the sheikh's training camps was a victory, but the truth is it was a defeat. Most of the weapons didn't even explode and they have enriched the sheikh's arsenal," he claimed. http://www.papillonsartpalace.com/cyanide.htm

DIRTY BOMB (2001)

Research on terrorism: trends, achievements & failures - series on political violence, by Andrew Silke, Routledge, 2004 Adam Nathan and David Leppard, 'Al-Qaeda's Men Held Secret Meetings to Build "dirty bomb"', Sunday 'limes, 14 October 2001, p. BIN LADEN'S NUCLEAR PLOT: Al-Qaeda's men held secret meetings to build 'dirty bomb'

Adam Nathan and David Leppard

EVIDENCE has emerged of a plan by Osama Bin Laden to manufacture a "dirty bomb" that could spray nuclear material over highly populated areas.

British intelligence services are investigating claims by a Bulgarian businessman that he was approached earlier this year by a middleman for Bin Laden seeking to obtain highly radioactive material.

The pair discussed setting up an environmental company as a front to buy nuclear waste that could be combined with conventional explosives to create a "dirty bomb".

It is believed to be at least the fourth attempt by Bin Laden to obtain nuclear material. The Saudi terrorist has publicly vowed to gain weapons of mass destruction.

The latest approach was made in April after Ivan Ivanov, a Bulgarian businessman with long-standing ties to a Middle Eastern contracting firm, was invited to Pakistan.

On his arrival in Peshawar, Ivanov, a former Bulgarian intelligence officer, said it became clear his hosts were enthusiastic supporters of Bin Laden. They apparently saw his political links in eastern Europe as a "useful asset".

Speaking in a cafe on the outskirts of Sofia last week, Ivanov recalled how the men took him to see Bin Laden, who was speaking at a religious festival on April 10 on the outskirts of Peshawar.

At the time Bin Laden was wanted for his alleged involvement in the bombing in 1998 of two American embassies in Africa, in which more than 200 people had been killed. Yet Ivanov claimed uniformed Pakistani soldiers armed with M-16 machine guns had provided security.

A day later, Ivanov said he was taken on a rough mountainous bus ride along Pakistan's remote border with China. There he was led to a secret location, where he was introduced to Bin Laden as "our partner from Europe".

When Ivanov discreetly checked his Magellan 310 global positioning system, it showed the meeting had actually taken place in China. Western intelligence sources described the meeting near the Pakistani border as "credible".

Ivanov then travelled with his new business associates to a large villa in Rawalpindi. The next day he was approached by a Pakistani scientist who described himself as chemical engineer.

The scientist, who was highly educated and spoke almost fluent English, said he was interested in obtaining spent nuclear fuel rods from the Kozlodui nuclear electricity plant in Bulgaria.

"He wanted a legitimate way of buying nuclear waste from the power plant," said Ivanov. "He was ready to give me money in advance to find local companies to help him to export this material."

Ivanov was offered $200,000 (£137,000) to help set up an environmental firm to buy nuclear waste, and asked if he would run the company. He declined the offer and, on his return home, informed officials in Bulgaria of the meeting.

British authorities in Pakistan later discovered the 49-year-old scientist had been issued with two six-month visas to visit Britain in the last two years. They are now investigating his links with the Bin Laden network.

Although his trips to Britain remain a mystery, intelligence officials believe the scientist may have met sympathisers at British universities or tried to set up front companies similar to the one planned in Bulgaria.

Ivanov's account of the Bin Laden plot has been backed by Velizar Shalamanov, the former Bulgarian deputy defence minister, who last week said Ivanov had worked for the government.

A British diplomatic source in Pakistan said: "This appears to be a sophisticated plot using a scientist and a credible front company, and that is a concern."

Although British intelligence believes Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network may have some crude chemical weapons such as cyanide, there is no evidence to suggest he has obtained any nuclear material.

In September 1998 Mamdouh Mahmud Salim, alleged to be a high-level aide to Bin Laden, was arrested in Germany after trying to buy low- grade nuclear reactor fuel.

Jamal al-Fadl, a former Bin Laden aide, told the FBI he had witnessed Al-Qaeda members trying to buy enriched uranium in the mid-1990s, according to court documents. He also claimed to have been to Sudan, where an associate of an army officer tried to sell him uranium for £1m.

Bin Laden has never made any secret of his interest in acquiring nuclear weapons. In an interview in January 1999, he said: "It would be a sin for Muslims not to try to possess the weapons that would prevent the infidels from inflicting harm on Muslims."

TOXIC PLANS (2003)

Exclusive: Toxic Shock: The Very Real Threat of Bio-Chemical Terror (Part 2) Adrian Morgan

Author: Adrian Morgan

Date Published: 2007-03-20

...On January 3, 2003, when police went to arrest Bourgass from his apartment above a chemist's shop at 352 High Road, Wood Green, north London, castor oil beans, processing equipment (a grinder, mortar and pestle, a bottle of acetone, funnel, thermometers and scales) and photocopied recipes for ricin production were found.

Bourgass had fled to an apartment in Crumpsall Lane, Manchester. When on January 14 police tried to enter this apartment, Bourgass stabbed Detective Constable Stephen Oake eight times as he tried to escape. The detective died from his wounds. Bourgass was convicted in June 2004 and given a life sentence for DC Oake's murder. In April 2005, Bourgass was found guilty of "conspiracy to commit a public nuisance by using poisons and explosives" and he was sentenced to 17 years' jail.

Bourgass had frequently slept at Abu Hamza's mosque in Finsbury Park, north London, where he photocopied his chemical recipes. He had used the mosque as his mailing address. Following Bourgass' arrest, the mosque was raided on January 20, 2003. Hidden behind ceiling panels were found false passports, CS gas canisters and, ominously, chemical warfare protection suits and a gas mask.

Bourgass had intended to use the ricin which he was developing to attack the busy Heathrow Express rail link, placing ricin on hand rails and in lavatories on the trains. During his 2005 trial, chemical experts confirmed that his production methods - using a solvent to break down fats and oils in the castor oil beans, filtering the substance and evaporating to form a powder - would have been effective. An expert from Porton Down chemical research center recreated the method and tested it on mice. http://www.fsmarchives.org/article.php?id=817543

CNS Reports Ricin Found in London: An al-Qa`ida Connection? http://cns.miis.edu/reports/ricin.htm

From The Times March 21, 2003

Ricin traces found in Paris station

From Adam Sage in Paris Recommend? FEARS grew that terrorists could be planning a poison attack in Europe after the French Interior Ministry said last night that traces of ricin had been found at a mainline railway station in Paris. Officials said that police had found the poison in flasks discovered in a locker by staff at the Gare de Lyon in eastern Paris.

On Monday the police had found two flasks containing a white powder, which tests revealed to be a “highly toxic” mixture containing ricin. They also discovered two other flasks and a bottle containing unidentified liquids.

The discovery will increase fears that a pan-European Islamic network is preparing chemical attacks. It comes two months after police found traces of the chemical in a flat in North London.

There is particular concern that Islamic extremists could try to strike during the first days of the attack on Iraq.

Although France has opposed the war, the authorities in Paris are worried that it could nevertheless be chosen as a target by Islamic groups.

The French Government reinforced its anti-terrorist measures yesterday, drafting in at least 400 additional soldiers to protect main cities.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the Interior Minister, put in place a police unit to co-ordinate the fight against terrorism. He also ordered that all high-speed trains be checked for suspicious packages.

France is known to be a home for Islamic militants who established terrorist networks in and around its cities in the 1990s. Although effective police action has prevented Islamic terrorist attacks there in recent years, French-based groups are thought to be providing support to those abroad, including in Britain.

Two days ago, for instance, French police arrested two suspected terrorists in connection with an inquiry into a so-called Chechen network. The arrests came after police raids in two Parisian suburbs, La Courneuve and Romainville, in December when nine suspects were detained.

At the time, the Interior Ministry said there was evidence to suggest that the group from La Courneuve and Romainville was planning a poison gas attack, as well as a conventional attack on Russian interests in Paris.

Although the police gave few details last night of the discovery at the station in Paris, there will be concern that it could have been planned for use in Britain.

In January, seven suspects, mostly of Algerian origin, were arrested in a flat in Wood Green, North London, where police discovered ricin traces in what appeared to be a chemical laboratory. After the raid, Tony Blair said it was inevitable that terrorists would try to attack Britain at some point.

In Manchester, a police officer was killed during a second operation in connection with the ricin inquiry.

French police will also be studying the possibility that terrorists could be planning attacks on targets in France.

Jean-Pierre Raffarin, the French Prime Minister, said yesterday: “The terrorist threat is present. France is targeted like all Western countries. Our country must be governed with calm and determination.”

Ricin is one of the deadliest naturally occurring poisons (Mark Henderson writes). It is four times more toxic than cobra venom and, when injected, can kill with a dose as small as one microgram per kilogram of bodyweight. Bioterrorism experts believe, however, that it is most likely to be used to poison food or water supplies. The toxin is among the most readily available to terrorists. It comes from the seeds of the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis, which is grown all over the world to make castor oil. About a million tonnes of castor oil is produced every year, and the mash left behind as waste can contain as much as 5 per cent ricin by weight. Although the toxic waste is normally rendered harmless by immersion in boiling water, the poison can be extracted using a simple chemical process.

As well as being easy to make in large amounts, ricin is highly stable, making it easy to store and transport. It works as a cytotoxin, or cell poison, with a single molecule capable of killing a cell.

Within three hours the victim will experience abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, followed by severe dehydration, reduced blood pressure and collapse of the liver, kidneys and lungs.

Death usually occurs within three to five days. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1121649.ece

Ricin Found in Paris; Anti-U.S. Plot? Ricin, Cyanide Found in Paris; U.S. Facilities May Have Been Targets

By Brian Ross March 20, 2003 Vials of the deadly poisons ricin and cyanide were found in a Paris train station locker, French authorities said today. Officials told ABCNEWS they believe the material was apparently to be used in attacks on U.S. targets in Europe.

Two vials of the toxin ricin were found in a self-check storage locker at the Gare de Lyon railway station on Monday. The locker also contained two bottles of a black powder, believed to be iron perchloride, used for explosives, and a small bottle of cyanide, French intelligence sources said.

Officials believe terrorists intended to attack U.S. targets in France or Italy, sources told ABCNEWS. The discovery may have disrupted a major attack, they said.

A ‘Match’ to Poisons Linked to Al Qaeda

Chemical analysis showed the ricin found in Paris "matched" traces of ricin that British anti-terrorist police found during a raid on a London apartment in January, sources said.

One of the seven suspects arrested during the London raid was found to have attended an al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan.

The London ricin was linked to a Kurdish extremist group in northern Iraq called Ansar al-Islam, known to have ties to al Qaeda.

French authorities had been watching the locker where the ricin was found, as part of a long-term anti-terror investigation, sources told ABCNEWS. They had hoped to arrest an agent when he or she came to retrieve the toxins. When no one arrived, they finally opened the locker.

Ricin is extremely dangerous, but not considered an effective tool for mass killing. It is classified as a Class B bioterrorism agent by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The poison, which is made from castor beans, is deadlier than cyanide and is most deadly when injected directly into a victim.

If inhaled, it can cause acute lung injury and progressive respiratory failure; if ingested, it can lead rapidly to gastrointestinal hemorrhage, severe dehydration and death within three days.

The other materials found in the Paris locker may indicate a plan to spread the poisons into the air by setting off an explosive charge. http://tvnz.co.nz/content/176960

DIRTY BOMB TO KILL THOUSANDS - US / UK

Terrorist jailed for life for conspiracy to murder in the UK and US

A British man who planned to blow up UK and American targets killing hundreds, if not thousands of people, was jailed for life today with a recommendation that he serve a minimum of 40 years.

Dhiren Barot proposed a series of co-ordinated attacks in the UK, including detonating a dirty bomb, launching an attack on a train and packing three limousines with gas cylinders and explosives before setting them off in underground car parks.

The 34-year-old, a close associate or member of Al Qaeda, was arrested by the Met's Anti-Terrorist Branch in what became at the time, the largest counter terrorist investigation ever launched in the UK. The investigation also involved officers from Special Branch.

Barot also made plans to cause lethal explosions at American financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange and Washington's World Bank.

His aim was to kill as many innocent civilians as possible.

Mr Justice Butterfield told Barot: "You are a determined and dedicated terrorist. You are a highly intelligent and extremely dangerous man. You trained for years in Pakistan in order to wreak death and destruction on the western world."

Barot had previously admitted conspiracy to murder at a hearing at Woolwich Crown Court in October.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of the Met Counter Terrorism Command, said:

"By his own admission Barot wanted to commit mass murder on both sides of the Atlantic. He was the leader of the plot. If he had succeeded, hundreds if not thousands could have died.

"His plans to set off a dirty bomb in this country could have caused widespread fear, panic and disruption.

"Barot was a determined and experienced terrorist. He went to terrorist training camps in 1995, long before 9/11, or the invasions of Afghanistan or Iraq. He is not someone who has recently been attracted to the terrorist cause.

"He is a full-time terrorist. His training showed through. He used anti-surveillance, coded messages and secret meetings, but he could not evade capture. He was stopped before he could attack the British and American people. As always, our concern for public safety was paramount.

"I cannot praise highly enough everyone who has been involved in this case for their tireless and skilful work in bringing Barot to justice. His arrest and conviction will be seen as a landmark in the fight against terrorism in the UK.

"For well over two years we have been unable to show the British public the reality of the threat they faced from this man. Now they can see for themselves the full horror of his plans."

Barot carried out extensive research and planning for the attacks, including reconnaissance visits to America, via the internet and visiting public and specialist libraries.

He wrote detailed documents for attacks in both countries, which were found on computer hard drives following his arrest in August 2004. Handwritten notes referring to chemical mixtures were also recovered.

In a written plan titled the Gas Limos Project, which was recovered from a laptop during a counter terrorist operation in Gujurat, Barot wrote about the chaos and pandemonium a bomb exploding on a tube train travelling under the Thames could cause.

He wrote: . . . imagine the chaos that would be caused if a powerful explosion were to rip through here and actually rupture the river itself. This would cause pandemonium, what with the explosions, flooding, drowning, etc that would occur/result.

Other elements of the 'Gas Limos Project' were recovered in the UK following his arrest in August 2004. It had been completed in the aftermath of the Madrid bombings and proposed a series of co-ordinated attacks to be launched in this country.

Various methods of attack, including packing limousines with explosives and driving them into underground car parks, arson and aeroplanes flown into buildings, were considered in it.

The Gas Limos Project also made reference to David Copeland, who carried out three attacks in London in 1999; Oklahoma bomber Timothy McVeigh and Ramzi Yusef, the 1993 World Trade Center bomber. This clearly demonstrates that Barot had studied and been influenced by the work of other terrorists.

Detailed plans including organisation structures and business histories of some of Barot's American targets - Citigroup, Prudential, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the New York Stock Exhange - were among other documents found on computers.

The plans also included details of structural surveys, escape routes and security measures and how close emergency services such as fire departments and hospitals were to each building.

The intention, clearly set out in the documents, was to collapse the buildings causing massive loss of life. Plans and research was still being worked on as late as July 2004.

A reconnaissance video filmed in New York and focusing on security measures at Manhattan buildings was also recovered after Barot's arrest.

The investigation, codenamed Operation Rhyme, set new standards for the scale and complexity of the evidence. Nearly 300 computers and around 1,800 items of discs, cds and removable storage were seized and examined, and 4,000 garages and lock ups visited.

The case also involved a wide range of investigative methods, including forensic linguistics to prove the authorship of documents; facial mapping; computer forensics and handwriting analysis. http://cms.met.police.uk/news/convictions/terrorism/terrorist_jailed_for_life_for_conspiracy_to_murder_in_the_uk_and_us

Muslim was planning dirty bomb attack in UK

By Duncan Gardham Published: 12:02AM BST 13 Oct 2006

Dhiren Barot pleaded guilty A British Muslim yesterday admitted plotting a series of co-ordinated terrorist attacks in this country including one involving a radioactive "dirty bomb".

Dhiren Barot, from Kingsbury, north London, also pleaded guilty to planning attacks against the IMF, World Bank and financial institutions in New York, Washington and Newark.

...Edmund Lawson, QC, told Woolwich Crown Court, south London: "These plans to carry out explosions at those premises with no warning were basically designed to kill as many innocent people as possible."

Barot described a car bomb plot called the "Gas Limos Project" as "the main cornerstone of a series of planned attacks" in Britain.

The court heard that Barot had asked for his plans to be outlined as part of his guilty plea.

"The principal planned attack involved packing three limousines with gas cylinders, explosives and the like and detonating them in underground car parks," Mr Lawson said.

Barot was said to have three other projects, including one that he called the "Radiation (Dirty Bomb) Project".

He had wanted the attacks to be launched in a "synchronised, concurrent and back-to-back" way with the main Gas Limos Project.

But the court heard he believed that the Radiation Project deserved to be an independent plot in its own right and would cause a number of further "collateral" objectives such as "injury, fear, terror and chaos".

Expert evidence suggested the Radiation Project, which was aimed at terrorising 500 people, would have been unlikely to kill but would cause "considerable fear, panic and social disruption".

Barot is said to have made notes of his plans in a Paperchase notebook and to have made a video of targets in New York. The projects, titled "Rough Presentation" and "Final Presentation" were saved on a computer.

Seven other men also face charges of conspiracy to murder. They deny the charges.

The prosecution has accepted that there is no evidence to contradict the defence assertion that no funding had been received and no bomb-making equipment or vehicles had been purchased.

Barot, 34, yesterday became the first Muslim accused of plotting explosions in this country to plead guilty. He was arrested in August 2004.

A short man, with a neatly clipped beard, he stood up and answered clearly "I plead guilty" when the charge of conspiracy to murder was put to him yesterday.

He spent much of the hearing tapping notes into a laptop computer.

Quietly spoken and smartly dressed, Barot is not the usual image of a terrorist. He was born a Hindu and brought up in a north London suburb by middle-class parents.

Family friends have told The Daily Telegraph how Barot's father, a banker from Nairobi, fled the worsening situation for Asians in Kenya in 1973, when Dhiren was two.

Manu Barot and his wife Bhartia arrived in Britain with Dhiren and his older sister and moved into a neat 1930s semi-detached home in a cul--de-sac in Kingsbury.

While Manu had been a successful professional in Kenya, in Britain his qualifications were worthless and he was forced to turn to factory work while his wife worked in a Sainsbury's supermarket.

Dhiren and his sister, three years his senior, attended a successful local high school and worked hard. She went on to university and became a teacher.

Dhiren was less academic but was known for his interest in fashion and music.

He planned to become a travel agent after leaving school and to work in hotel management and travel the world.

In fact, he became increasingly interested in Islam and converted when he was 20, prompting a rift with his father, who by then was suffering from a heart condition.

Barot travelled to Pakistani-controlled Kashmir to "investigate the duty of jihad".

He trained with one of the groups fighting Indian troops in the region and said later that he had "witnessed a side of Islam which cannot be found in classrooms".

The trial continues. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1531326/Muslim-was-planning-dirty-bomb-attack-in-UK.html

BBC NEWS | UK | Muslim convert who plotted terror - Muslim convert who plotted terror

Barot attended terrorism training camps Dhiren Barot was raised a Hindu in the UK before he converted to Islam. Woolwich Crown Court heard that Barot, 34, from Kingsbury in north-west London, who admitted conspiracy to murder last month, planned to detonate a dirty bomb and launch an attack on London's Tube.

Edmund Lawson QC, prosecuting, told the court that Barot was born in India in December 1971, and was brought to the UK by his parents the following year.

He attained GCSEs at school in Kingsbury and after leaving in 1988 obtained a City and Guilds in tourism.

His only sustained time in work was as an airline ticket clerk in Piccadilly, central London, from 1991 to 1995, and he later put in for a transfer to Heathrow but his application was turned down, Mr Lawson said.

Overseas trip

Then, in September 1995, he told his employers he was going on a "long overseas trip".

Mr Lawson said investigations revealed he went for a long training session at a terrorist camp in Pakistan.

He inferred Barot was being financially supported somehow, as he did not seek social security benefits at any time.

BAROT TERROR CASE Planned radioactive "dirty" bomb Proposed using petrol tanker for explosion Planned train attacks, including Heathrow Express and Tube under Thames...

Bomb plotter jailed for life Other jobs he appears to have had were as a night porter at luxury apartment blocks in London and he may have also worked for a company called Phone City, Mr Lawson added.

The QC said Barot appeared to have no fixed address in the UK, and he moved frequently from one house to another.

That would have been consistent with anti-surveillance activities, Mr Lawson said.

He said Barot wrote a book published in 1999 called The Army Of Madinah under the name Esa al-Hindi, in which it said Barot converted to Islam at the age of 20.

Mr Lawson told how Barot also had a history of "losing" his passports, and said that several times his documents were reported missing before others were applied for.

Weapons notebook

Barot received extensive terror training in the use of weapons and explosives, first going to Pakistan for terrorist purposes in October 1995.

He went to the disputed territory of Kashmir and then to a mountainous area called Kotti for many months.

Detailed notes which he made while there in a notebook were later recovered by police in a garage.

The notebook referred to Kalashnikov and AK47 weapons, grenades, various chemicals including sulphuric acid, poisons, a bomb containing TNT and sulphuric acid, and the preparation of nitro-glycerine.

It also featured Molotov cocktails and napalm bombs, and a section on "how to blow up a bridge".

Poison recipes

Parts of the notebook depicting a "basic design for a phosphorous bomb" were shown on TV screens in court.

There were also details on the effects and manufacture of poisons including cyanide and ricin.

Mr Lawson said it featured poison recipes including one for botulinum toxin, "the most toxic substance known to man".

After Barot was given a life sentence, Peter Clarke, the head of the Metropolitan Police's Anti-Terrorist branch, said there was a "wealth of evidence" he was a "very important figure" within al-Qaeda.

He told the BBC "We believe that early in 2004, he presented his plans to al-Qaeda leadership with the intention of getting the permission and the resources to mount attacks in the United Kingdom."

The minimum 40-year tariff means Barot will be almost 75 by the time he is released from prison. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6121084.stm

LIQUID BOMB TO KILL THOUSANDS

Agent infiltrated terror cell, U.S. says Air travel in chaos after plot to bomb airliners exposed

Friday, August 11, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Terrorists were in the "final stages" of a plot to simultaneously blow up as many as 10 jets leaving Britain for the U.S., sending the planes and thousands of passengers into the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said ... http://edition.cnn.com/2006/US/08/10/us.security/index.html

British Muslims 'planned to kill thousands by bringing down SEVEN transatlantic airliners in one go with liquid bombs'By CHARLOTTE GILL and SAM GREENHILL Last updated at 13:30 04 April 2008

A gang of British Muslims planned to blow up seven planes within hours in the biggest terrorist atrocity since 9/11, a court heard yesterday. Two thousand passengers would have died in the plot by eight fanatics working "in the name of Islam", the jury was told. It could have involved up to 18 suicide bombers. And they were almost ready to strike. The jets they targeted would all have been bound from Heathrow to cities in the U.S. and Canada, it was claimed. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-555465/British-Muslims-planned-kill-thousands-bringing-SEVEN-transatlantic-airliners-liquid-bombs.html

Muslim men plotted to down 7 planes Associated Press

LONDON -- Three British Muslims were convicted Monday of plotting to murder thousands by downing at least seven trans-Atlantic airliners in simultaneous attacks designed by al-Qaida to be the deadliest terrorist strike since Sept. 11, 2001.

Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 28, Assad Sarwar, 29, and Tanvir Hussain, 28 were found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court in London of leading a plan to detonate bombs on aircraft bound for the United States and Canada, using liquid explosives hidden in soda bottles.

Four other men were acquitted of conspiring to bomb airliners, but admitted lesser charges — and in one case conspiracy to murder. An eighth man was cleared completely.

Tanvir Hussain, 28, was found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court, London on 07 September 2009 of conspiring to activate bombs disguised as drinks. Hussain was one of three men to have been found guilty of plotting to kill thousands of people by blowing up planes from London to North America with home-made liquid bombs. The men's arrests in 2006 led to new airport restrictions on liquids and brought chaos to travellers. The case brought sweeping new restrictions for air passengers, including limits on the amount of liquids and gels they can take carry on board. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/international/item_8Me0bP3w1l5QKZuMU1rqNJ

ITALIAN CATHEDRAL ATTACK ON CHRISTMAS

Italy: Plot to blow up Milan Cathedral Islam in Europe December 4 2008

Ilhami is not the first 'peace activist' to plan terror attacks. Two Moroccans arrested in Italy yesterday wanted to blow up the Milan Cathedral on Christmas.

They hoped an attack during the busy holiday would cost dozens of lives. This according to tapped phone calls, reports La Repubblica.

The two belonged to an Islamic terror cell which had been followed by the Italian police already for months. "The plot was discovered yet before the suspects could get explosives," says the Italian minister of Internal Affairs, Roberto Maroni, in response.

Rachid Ilhami (31) and Abdelkader Ghafir (43) were arrested in Giussano, a city 25km away from Milan. The detectives gathered from tapped phone calls and confiscated computer files that the two also prepared attacks on a supermarket and a police bureau. They are arrested on suspicion of terrorism and eventual cooperation with al-Qaeda.

Ilhami had been living since he was ten in Italy. He is married and has two children. He worked as a blacksmith and in his free time worked in a center for peace activities, in the area of prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's villa, according to Corriere della Sera. http://europenews.dk/en/node/16911

EIFFEL TOWER

Terror plot to blow up Eiffel Tower uncoveredBy IAN SPARKS Last updated at 22:26 11 January 2008

The plot to blow up the Eiffel Tower was uncovered through intercepted phone calls A plot by Islamic terrorists to blow up the Eiffel Tower has been uncovered. A scrambled short-wave radio conversation exposing the planned attack on the world's most visited monument was picked up by Portuguese air traffic controllers and passed on to French spy chiefs. The 1,060ft high tower has more than six million visitors a year - an average of more than 16,000 a day. A successful strike on the 7,500 ton iron tower, which was looked down on Paris since 1889, would be a French 9/11 and could cost thousands of lives. The threat was uncovered in a "vague and muffled" radio conversation picked up by air traffic controllers in Lisbon on Thursday.

It comes after a spate of other threats made in recent days on the websites linked to Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda terror network, calling for the "brothers of Islam to strike Paris". A police source close to France's DST intelligance agency said last night: "It was a muffled conversation in Arabic that was passed on to us as a matter of course, but our analysts clearly identified the threat. "The sheer number of visitors going up the tower every day means a bomb blowing up there could cause the most massive loss of life. We've been at our red security alert for several months." The source added: "Security at the tower was already tight, but is now being stepped up." Paris's socialist mayor, Bertrand Delanoe, has been given extra security protection after an Islamist website used by Al Qaeda members listed him as a target. Mr Delanoe - one of France's few openly gay politicians - was stabbed in an anti-gay attack in 2002. In January 2005, French intelligence officers arrested three French-born Algerians suspected of plotting to blow up the Eiffel Tower. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-507760/Terror-plot-blow-Eiffel-Tower-uncovered.html

FBI Arrests Three Men in Terror Plot that Targeted New York
Documents Allege NYPD Informant Went Bad, Tipped Off Subjects to Surveillance

By BRIAN ROSS, RICHARD ESPOSITO and CLAYTON SANDELL
Sept. 20, 2009

The FBI arrested three men overnight on charges they lied to federal agents during an investigation of a terror plot against New York City that authorities say was "the real deal."

Authorities arrest three suspects in connection to an alleged terror plot.

Agents in Denver arrested Najibullah Zazi, a 24-year old airport shuttle driver, who authorities say appears to be the ringleader of the alleged plot. Also charged with lying to the FBI was Zazi's father, Mohammed Zazi.

In New York, the FBI arrested the leader of a Queens mosque, Ahmad Afzali, who authorities allege had been a New York police department informant but "went bad" and tipped off Zazi, his father and others to the investigation.

Afzali's alleged double cross compromised the case and led the FBI to move in on the suspects much earlier than they had wanted and led to extreme tensions between the Denver office of the FBI and the NYPD. One law enforcement official said the NYPD had been specifically asked not to reveal the investigation to its informants, but went ahead anyway.

In affidavits filed in connection with the arrests, agents say they discovered nine pages of handwritten notes in Zazi's computer with details on how to make a homemade bomb.

According to the affidavit, Zazi initially denied knowing anything about the notes when he was shown them by the FBI during a three day interrogation.

Later, Zazi admitted the notes were his and that he attended an al Qaeda training camp in Pakistan and received instructions on weapons and explosives.

Law enforcement and intelligence officials say the case began in 2008 when the CIA twice picked up on Zazi's presence in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a place often used by al Qaeda to arrange meetings with foreigners.

Zazi maintained publicly that he had no ties to al Qaeda and had gone to Peshawar only to visit his wife.

According to the FBI affidavits, Zazi went to Peshawar in Aug. 2008 and again in Jan. 2009.

Law enforcement officials told ABCNews.com that electronic intercepts revealed Zazi had sent text messages suggesting, in code, the plot was nearing the attack stage. "The wedding cake is ready," Zazi allegedly wrote.

The three men are scheduled to appear in court Monday morning on the charges, which authorities say are designed to keep them in custody while more serious charges are considered.

The Hunt for a Hidden Bomb Factory
Have authorities really shut down an alleged New York terror plot?

Days after local police and federal agents busted up an alleged terror plot targeting public transportation in the New York area, law enforcement and counterterrorism officials still aren't sure if they have captured all of the suspects who might have been in on the plan. Contacted by NEWSWEEK, some officials say they believe U.S. agencies "successfully disrupted" the plot with the arrests last weekend of two men in Denver and one in Queens, New York. But other officials say that more suspects are being sought, and that urgent efforts are continuing to locate what investigators fear could be a bomb factory or an explosives stockpile.

AGAINST SYNAGOGUES & US PLANES

FBI foils terror plot

WASHINGTON, May 21 (UPI) -- The FBI and other U.S. law enforcement agencies have foiled a would-be terror plot to blow up synagogues and shoot down U.S. military aircraft. The case was striking not only because of the efficiency of the FBI but also because the alleged plotters -- three Americans and one Haitian -- were jailhouse converts to Islam, the New York Daily News reported.

The four men were arrested after allegedly planting bombs outside two synagogues. They had also bought what they thought was a Stinger missile. All of the ordnance came from undercover law enforcement agents and was fake.

James Cromitie, also known as "Abdul Rahman," David Williams, also known as "Daoud" and "DL," Onta Williams, also known as "Hamza," and Laguerre Payen, also known as "Amin" and "Almondo," now face charges "arising from a plot to detonate explosives near a synagogue in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York, and to shoot military planes located at the New York Air National Guard Base at Stewart Airport in Newburgh, New York, with Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles," the FBI said in a statement.

However, "In their efforts to obtain weapons, the defendants dealt with an informant acting under law enforcement supervision, and the FBI and other agencies … (made sure they only received) an inactive missile and inert explosives," the statement said.

The charges were filed in a criminal complaint in White Plains federal court. They "include conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction in the United States and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles," the FBI said.

Security analysts have long expressed their concern that extreme Islamist activists have been active in U.S. prisons seeking to convert inmates they could use to carry out terror attacks within the United States. Such converts would in effect serve as "Trojan horses." They would be recruited within the country and would not have to go through the rigorous systems of border security, monitoring and surveillance that foreign nationals visiting the United States have had to undergo since the al-Qaida terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, killed around 3,000 Americans.

The FBI and other U.S. security agencies have often been criticized for carrying out such "sting" operations. Critics allege that the conspiracies revealed could not have been developed as seriously if it were not for the encouragement that undercover agents and informers controlled by the law enforcement agencies had given the plotters.

However, defenders of such tactics reply that they do indeed work, and that no terrorist attacks have been carried out in the past seven and half years on U.S. soil precisely because these operations have been so effective in attracting would-be terrorists who would certainly have found their arms in other ways.

The same day the arrest of the four men was announced, U.S. President Barack Obama gave a speech on national security at the National Archives in Washington, reaffirming his determination to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

As part of Obama's new policy on operating through established legal and constitutional channels to seek the conviction of terror suspects, the Justice Department announced that Gitmo detainee Ahmed Ghailani, suspected of having a role in the 1998 bombings of U.S. embassies in East Africa, will face trial in a federal court in New York. That would be the first civilian court case for a "high-value detainee" from Guantanamo Bay.

Obama's Gitmo plan has drawn harsh words -- and votes -- from the Democrat-controlled 111th Congress, which has refused Obama's request for $80 million to close the prison -- at least until details of what will happen with the prisoners there are released.

It didn't help that FBI Director Robert Mueller told a House of Representatives committee that moving detainees to the United States could create security issues and increase the chance of an attack on U.S. soil.

Equally concerning for the White House is the criticism it has received when the administration has taken a position, such as the reversal on the release of alleged torture photos, that appears more in line with the Bush administration than Obama supporters like or that candidate Obama espoused a few short months ago.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney gave a very different speech, also on national security, at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington Thursday. Cheney was outspoken in defending the widely criticized practice of "waterboarding" some terror suspects to get crucial information out of them and has been roundly critical of Obama's move on this issue.

Cheney's partisan and controversial -- but clear and uncompromising -- speech and the arrests of the four terror suspects in New York state all highlighted the pitfalls and complexities Obama has to navigate in reforming the U.S. legal system while continuing to defend the American people from the very real threat of terrorist conspiracies designed to kill and maim them. The debate will continue.

Investigators: Northwest Bomb Plot Planned by al Qaeda in Yemen Officials Say Bomb Materials Sewn Into Suspect's Underwear by Top Terror Bomb Maker

111 comments By RICHARD ESPOSITO and BRIAN ROSS Dec. 26, 2009

The plot to blow up an American passenger jet over Detroit was organized and launched by al Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect's underwear before sending him on his mission, federal authorities tell ABC News.

Northwest Airlines flight 253 is shown on the runway after arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Airport... Northwest Airlines flight 253 is shown on the runway after arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Airport from Amsterdam on Friday. A passenger aboard the plane set off an explosive device, causing a commotion and some minor injuries, a Delta official said. Northwest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta. (J.P. Karas/AP Photo) Investigators say the suspect had more than 80 grams of PETN, a compound related to nitro-glycerin used by the military. The so-called shoe bomber, Richard Reid, had only about 50 grams kin his failed attempt in 2001 to blow up a U.S.-bound jet. Yesterday's bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in "proper contact" with the explosive material, investigators told ABC News.

Investigators say the suspect, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian student whose birthday was last Tuesday, has provided detailed information about his recruitment and training for what was supposed to be a Christmas Day suicide attack. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/al-qaeda-yemen-planned-northwest-flight-253-bomb-plot/story?id=9426085

Chicago taxi driver charged with aiding terrorist

Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:39pm EDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - A Chicago taxi driver was arrested on Friday and accused of sending money to a Pakistani militant with al Qaeda ties and of planning to bomb a U.S. sports stadium, authorities said.

ISRAEL VS UN'S ANTI-ISRAEL BIAS
Israel should have [a long time ago] press the UN for:
1) Condemming Arab Muslim 'Palestinian' parents, teachers, leaders, Mullahs, for using Arab kids as human shields and as human bombs, clarifying the real culprits in Arabs' deaths.
2) Violations by ILLEGAL PA Arabs "settlers" on Israel's "agreed" borders by the UN.
3) "Palestinian" Violation of virtually ALL agreemants pacts with Israel (Oslo, Camp David, etc.).
4) The PA official media & education = hate (crimes) campaign on "the joos", (not just on Israel...).
5) Exposing the constant intimdation on nations by the GOLIATH ARAB MUSLIM (oil) block, to tarnish innocent Israel in the UN.

________

TO THE ARAB MUSLIM ANTI-ISRAEL PROPAGANDIST:

1) Are you denying that the Arab racist attacks on Jews in Israel/"palestine" has started since 1838 (Safed) [so were the attacks in 1883, 1920, 1921, 1929 - Hebron, etc.]?

2) Had Israel be a (mostly) Arab-Muslim State, would the intolerant Arab-Muslim Goliath world not accept them?

3) Why is there a complete silence on the historical fact of Arab immigration late 1800s early 1900s into Israel/"palestine"?

4) What anti-Israel bigotry is stronger, the "Arab racism"; factor? or the 'Islamic-Jihad' factor?

5) 'Moral equivalence' Do you have Arab activists on behalf of Israeli victims, just like you have Jewish, Israeli, Zionists activists for the (so called) 'Palestinian cause' (whatever that is...)?

6) If humane Israel would really go after "unarmed poor palestinians" as the 'Pallwood' propagandists tell us, How many Arabs would have survived Israel's might?

7) Who's more at fault, the Arab Muslim "Palestinians" parents pushing for Shahid-isim, or the indoctrinating Mullahs, Imams in the holy Mosques for using "Palestinian" kids and women as human bombs and as human shields (so they can blame the Zionists when Arab kids die)?

8) What would have happened if Arab Muslim "Palestinians" would have invested as much energy in rebuilding their lives as they do in destroying both nations' lives in fascistic Jihad, total hatred and campaign for GENOCIDE [to "drink the blood of the Jews" or to "push them all to the sea", or to "wipe them off of map"]?

9) Why does "bad" IDF Israeli army announce an area residents' civilians to evacuate before an operation against terrorists?

10) Why did Humane Israel's IDF invented specially low range missiles designed to hit ONLY the [terror] target and minimize collateral damage?

11) When was the last time the "Palestinian" well oil-ed propaganda machine has retracted [or even apologized] for it's usual PALLYWOOD fake images industry?

12) What's the difference between a Christian in Indonesia, Buddhist in Thailand, Christian in Nigeria, in Philippines, Australians in Bali (2002), non Muslims in London (0707/2005), in Madrid (bombing), "not the-right-kind-of-Muslims" in Shiite-Sunni hateful massacres in Iraq, oppression & massacres in the "Islamic Republic of Iran", and Israeli victims of the same "evil ideology"?

13) What's a harder oppression, your "average" Arab Muslim regime's on it's own people, Hamas-tan Islamic Apartheid [which most "Palestinians" supported!] on non Muslims, or the pro-Jihad parents' on their kids?

14) What would have happened if at least ONE Arab Muslim nation [regular or oil-ed one] would really care about the Arab [brothers, that since the 1960's started to call themselves as] "Palestinians" and let them get off the terror slum into normality and even prosperity?

15) What part of 'BLIND FASCISM' do Arab-Muslims deny, the usual obsessed anti Israel demonization [no matter what Israel does] or the reluctance to see Israel's super kind gestures for those that are trying to kill them [releases from prison, giving away own land vital to it's security, humanitarian aid, etc.] not as goodness but as "weakness"?

16) Why is it that when Islamists terrorists [Hamas or Hezbullah, Islamic Jihad, etc.] succeed in making sure Arab kids die [with their known tactics of cowardly firing among or behind children, etc.] the Arabs, Muslims rejoice and the Israelis, Jews are saddened ?

16) How can land be an issue [or the blatant lies the Arab lobby's financed: Jimmy Carter has said, though he admitted that Israel is a great equal democracy for all, Arabs and Jews alike!'] if "moderate" Palestinian official government still has venomous hatred and pro 'death cult' in it's regular curriculum and on it's official TV, or that such "moderate" Arab media outlets [like Al Jazeera] still glorify mass murder as "martyrdom"?

17) Who's more powerful, the Arab Muslim Goliath Oil mafia "lobby" on the world or a Chinese, Italian, Israeli, Irish, pharmaceutical, cigarettes lobbyists in Washington?

18) Had the International Arab Muslim lobby of nations in the UN [or the EU] not threatened other nations to bash Israel 24/7 [motivated by intolerance only!], What would be then the outcome?

_____

Let's make it clear, even if there will be a "Palestine" state, it will never change the factual history, that a group of foreign Arab immigrants came into the (historic) land of the Jews (and started to call themselves as "Palestinians" in the 1960's) and hijacked the world comunity via terrorism and Arab oil power to give them yet a second 'Palestine' state (after Jordan).
